Description:

Mauser byf 42 Portuguese Luger – M1943
This rare handgun is a Mauser code ‘byf’ 42 date with a phosphate finish (black matt/parkerized finish) produced roughly 5,000, for the Portuguese Army. The M1943 contract was most likely not a conventional foreign government purchase through Mauser, rather it was more likely a transfer of guns in the first half of 42 byf m-block from the German Army to Portuguese Army.  Portugal used (part of) these pistols during the guerilla wars in their former colonies of Angola and Mozambique; the hot and humid countries requiring a phosphate finish for extra protection from the rains and moisture.  Therefore it was proofed according to German Army specifications.  Variations exist as pistols were maintained with spare parts during the war period.

The black Bakelite “Black Widow” grips are typical for this pistol.
The pistol has the standard German proofs and markings, the right side of the receiver stamped with two eagle/135 proofs and an eagle/swaz military acceptance mark.
The two magazines have the correct FXO, eagle/37 and P.08 markings unnumbered aluminum bottoms.
4” barrel with a bright clean bore.  9 mm caliber.
Mechanically fine.  Overall condition as photographed and described is very good.
